7 symptoms to tell you if your loved one is under depression
How do you treat someone who recently got fractured or injured or burnt? That's right....with utmost care and right kind of medical help. Physical injuries like this are much easier to notice while it's not true for injuries our soul has. We live in a society where we feel so connected yet so disconnected. The social networking sites makes you believe that everyone on your friend list is available to you....at least if they are ONLINE. However the truth is out.... the very moment you actually need someone to hug or cuddle. They say the world is on their palms while they cannot touch anything with their finger tip except their screens.
People are more lonely, more depressed and more unhappy in real and it becomes hard to recognize a person with depression. This person can be anyone....your partner, parent, child, colleague, neighbor or a close friend.
The person you hang out with every week...the person who passes a smile to you in office every single day....the person who you following on Instagram and has thousands of followers like you.
Physical well being is directly proportional to your mental well being. If you are not mentally healthy or stressed...it will show the effects sooner or later on your physical health. Nevertheless we must act fast to cure ourselves in order to keep pace with life.
This is not just about us...this is about people also we hang out with. People say it's hard to recognize a depressed person because they come wearing a social mask in public and pretend as if everything is good with them. The reason behind is....our society is biased towards physical injuries and mental injuries. Seeking a psychiatrist for help is still so underrated.
Why people hide if they are mentally sick? There could be number of reasons to it.
*social stigma
*fear of being left alone
*going to a psychiatrist
*being labelled as mentally sick or retarded
*unable to recognize the depression
*loss of trust in people
*no interest in life
Whatever the reason be...around 40 percent people believe it's not so difficult to recognize someone with depression if we truly care. I have listed here 7 symptoms to find out if someone is actually in depression or just going through a tough phase.
1. Anxiety and panic attacks: Most of us feel anxious at some point or other....for example before exam, first date, stage performance or any other activity which gets us into a fear of failure. People with depression get anxious more frequently and sometimes..it leads to panic attacks. During a panic attack a person goes into any of these modes- flight, fight or freeze. More they try to control it, more worse it gets.
2.Loss of concentration: Anyone who is diving into depression has to deal with loosing concentration power. It gets so difficult to be on one thing at a time that the person almost gives up on even trying.
3.Loss of memory: Along with the above two factors if the person is unable to remember things as he/she used to...its a clear sign of depression.
4.Frequent break downs: For anyone who have lost a dear one....its pretty normal to cry over them however if you don't step in for help or to console ...it leads to depression. The person confides himself/ herself in deep sorrow and develops kind of comfort being in that state forever.
5.Minimum interactions: This symptom is quite noticeable if the person was socially active earlier and now all of a sudden he/she has chosen to be the other way. They don't want to be seen and do their best to avoid any interaction. They would shut them in a room and turn down any invitation for get together or parties.
6.Unexplained physical illness: We all fall sick ....some rarely...some frequently but there is always a reason to explain our sickness by a doctor. However this is not true in case of depression. People with depression suffer ailments which don't have a base. Headaches, nausea, pain and insomnia are very common ailments among people with depression.
7.Suicidal thoughts: This is the most dangerous symptom of depression and sometimes it's too late to find out. If you ever doubt, in the light of above mentioned signs ...that someone is going through depression...ask them questions related to life. If they sound negative or keep mum on this topic....it might point towards their failure to continue with life. I have seen a few cases wherein the person himself admitted that he wants to end his life. Thankfully he was provided with immediate help and counseling. Had it been ignored...the person would have committed suicide for sure. Depressed person feels that there is only one solution to end their pain which is death.
I hope this article helps you as a tool to trace out any person in your vicinity who is depressed. Many a times we are depressed however we don't give it a name until someone intervenes. The first step to treatment of a ailment is ....its correct timely recognition. Please help someone to get over this and find them medical help if needed.
